SEOUL, South Korea – General Motors (GM) has announced a significant expansion of its commitment to South Korea, doubling its investment to $600 million to modernize production facilities and boost the competitiveness of its small SUV lineup. This follows an initial $300 million investment plan announced last December.

Upgrading Infrastructure for Global Competitiveness

The new capital injection will focus on two major Korean manufacturing plants. Key upgrades include:

  • Next-Gen Stamping Equipment: Integration of state-of-the-art machinery to improve body precision.
  • Plant Modernization: Streamlining assembly lines to enhance overall product quality.
  • Tech Integration: Boosting the technical features of locally-produced small SUVs to maintain a competitive edge in global markets.

A “Center of Excellence” for Small SUVs

Hector Villarreal, President of GM Korea, emphasized that the Korean subsidiary serves as a “Center of Excellence” for GM’s global small SUV production.

  • 2025 Performance: GM Korea recorded sales of 462,310 units in 2025.
  • Export Dependency: The company is highly reliant on international markets, with over 95% of its total output exported.
  • US Market Focus: More than 85% of production is currently shipped to the United States, despite a 7.5% year-on-year sales dip in 2025 attributed to shifting import tariff dynamics.

Labor Relations and Future Outlook

While the investment is seen as a positive signal by local labor unions, concerns remain regarding long-term strategy. Ahn Kyu-baek, a prominent labor leader, noted that while the upgrades are welcome, the company has yet to confirm plans for Electric Vehicle (EV) production at the Korean sites.

Under a 2018 agreement with the South Korean government—which included a $7.15 billion rescue package—GM is contractually bound to maintain its investment in the country for at least 10 years.

Growth Targets for 2026

Building on the momentum of rising demand in North America, GM Korea aims to increase its annual production by 8.5%, targeting a total output of 500,000 units in 2026.
